What is a headboard?
With a history stretching as far back as ancient Egypt, a headboard is a piece of furniture that is attached to the bed’s head.
In some instances, they are built onto the bed frame, and in others, they are secured as a secondary furniture item, it just depends on the style of the bed and the headboard itself.
They can be made from a wide range of materials, but the internal structure is usually constructed from wood or metal that can be upholstered in a range of fabrics for extra comfort.
Headboards come in almost endless designs, allowing you to choose a style that reinforces your colour scheme and can add to the overall feel of your bedroom.
Benefits of a headboard
Apart from helping to finish your bed, headboards have a wide range of uses, including:
- It makes lounging more comfortable
Whether you are bingeing on the next series, reading, or even discussing the events of the day with your partner, you do a lot more than lie in your bed to sleep.
Having a lovely headboard can provide extra support for the head, neck, and back while you sit up or recline and make the whole experience more comfortable.
It can also be essential if you enjoy things like breakfast in bed or prefer to sip your morning coffee while still in bed – as eating and drinking while lying down can cause digestive problems.
To make you even more comfy, choose a headboard with extra, built-in cushioning.
- The room feels warmer
Being cold can make it hard to drift off and can even wake you up from slumber.
To help keep warm in bed during the cooler months, a headboard can provide insulation and protection from cold walls.
- Keep your pillows in the right place
Having your pillows in the right place is one of the easiest ways to guarantee a good night’s sleep, so why not help keep them in position with a stylish and sumptuous headboard?
- Protect your wall from damage
The movement of furniture, spills, and natural oils from the skin and hair can mark or damage wall décor over time.
By using a headboard, you can protect the wall and prolong the life of your décor as well as boost the comfort of your bed.

Headboards generally come in three styles, which dictates they should be installed. These are:
• Free-standing headboards
These headboards are simply propped between the wall and the bed and can be adjusted to different heights on the headboard legs.
They commonly don’t need to be attached to the bed itself, and because they are usually oversized, help make a real impact.
• Wall-mounted headboards
Wall-mounted headboards are attached to the wall instead of the bed and usually need wall anchors to hold in place, instead of fixing to the bed itself.
• Bedframe-mounted headboards
Unlike its counterparts, this headboard style is fixed directly to the head end of the bed to provide the comfort and stability needed.
To install them, you will need to:
1. Attach the headboard legs to the headboard
2. Locate the fixing holes in the bed base – which are frequently marked with a sticker – then drill the connecting holes into the bed base. Be sure to triple-check all measurements before you drill!
3. Screw in the retaining bolt
4. Slide the headboard onto the retaining bolts and tighten with a screwdriver until secure.
